Abstract/Contents:"For many years grounds managers in charge of turf areas subjected to heavy traffic have recognized the need for cultivation (often called aerification). In recent years the benefits of cultivation have been applied to lawns as well, resulting in a significant source of income for some lawn service companies. While there are several benefits to cultivation, the two major objectives are relief of soil compaction and thatch control. In the lawn care industry both soil compaction and excessive thatch control are of concern. Thatch often develops because of the highly compacted soil conditions. The most frequently asked questions about cultivation are related to frequency and intensity. The answers will determined by the type of equipment used and the amount of thatch and compaction existing for a given turf. First, one must address the effectiveness of the aerifier. While we do not have definite standards on how many holes should be created, based on research we suggest a coring hold every 3 inches with at least 1/2 inch diameter tines and at least 2 inches deep into the soil. How often should turf be aerified? This depends on how effectively the equipment works and how bad the thatch or compaction condition which exists. On very thatchy or highly compacted lawns, two intensive treatments per year should be considered."
