Abstract/Contents:"Due to a lack of effective labeled postemergence herbicides for crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.) control a possible solution might be to expand the times fenoxaprop can be safely applied. Low rates and various schedules of fenoxaprop in ryegrass were evaluated in 1990 at the Adelphia Research Center, Adelphia, New Jersey. The objectives of the study were to (i) to decrease the phytotoxic effect of fenoxaprop when applied earlier in the season than recommended by using multiple sequential low rates and (ii) to determine the effect of multiple low rates on crabgrass control. All treatments were applied in 260 l of water ha-1 at 210 kPa to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. 'Palmer') using a CO2-propelled backpack sprayer. The study consisted of three replications in a completely randomized block design. Treatments included two rates of fenoxaprop (0.034 and 0.045 kg ai ha-1) applied either alone early in the season or sequentially throughout the season. Treatments were applied May 31 (PO1), June 26 (PO2), July 18 (PO3) and August 24 (PO4). Turf color and injury were rated and crabgrass control was evaluated four times during the experimental period. No color differences were observed with any of the treatments regardless of the time of application. Turf injury was observed only with the first application of 0.034 kg ai ha-1 (PO1). The other treatments, both after the first application and subsequent application, resulted in no turf injury. Applications of 0.034 and 0.045 kg ai ha-1 provided crabgrass control in early season but control was poor in late season. The treatment of 0.045 kg ai ha-1 applied at (PO1), (PO2), and (PO3) resulted in season long crabgrass control. The remaining treatments resulted in no significant differences between them. This preliminary study indicated that by using multiple sequential low rates we can expand the time of fenoxaprop application before and after that recommended by the manufacturer without causing turf injury and still obtain good crabgrass control."
