Abstract/Contents:Interviews Erik Sides, training manager for Jacobsen Turf Equipment, regarding when and how to grind reels. Recommends to first clean the reels and cylinders, and then to check to be sure there are no worn bearings. Suggests conducting daily bedknife/reel clearance checks to avoid metal-to-metal contact. Cautions against neglecting the relief angle when grinding, claiming that "there are two distinct schools of thought on grinding:...those that spin grind only and those that relief grind in addition to spin grinding. I recommend everyone maintain the relief angle throughout the life of the reel." Recommends laying out a grinding schedule to ensure the unit receives regular maintenance.
