Abstract/Contents:"During the years 1974-78 road side sowing trials were carried out jointly by the National Swedish Road Administration and Weibulls Turfgrass Section at 8 different locations in Sweden. The trials included a species/variety trial (A/S-74) with 39 species and varieties of grasses and herbs as well as a mixture trial (B-74) with 15 different mixtures. Trials were scored for a.o. plant height, colour, ground cover and general impression. As expected, Festuca rubra, performed very well and constitutes the most important species for roadsides in Sweden. Differences between the subspecies rubra (Reptans), commutata (Erika) and trichophylla (Polar) were slight. Festuca trachyphylla and Festuca ovina could be included as minor components to increase adaptability of the mixture to sandy and dry conditions. Poa pratensis did relatively well and the inclusion of this species is justified to give the mixture a more balanced composition and a low stand height. Poa nemoralis and Canadian Poa compressa performed unexpectedly well but their use for roadsides may be questioned as they are not native in many areas of the country. Agrostis tenuis is another important component for low maintenance areas. Boral gave the best overall performance, Highland bent gave acceptable results in the south, while a local northern strain 'Nörlandsk' was best adapted to conditions in Northern Sweden. Of the two rapidly establishing species used, Phleum bertolonii was clearly superior to Lolium perenne, the latter suffering from poor winter hardiness. No other grasses or herbs gave acceptable results. The mixture trial showed that the standard roadside mixtures (A, B) presently used in Sweden gave the best results."
