| Abstract/Contents: | Determined if Pythium blight could be predicted from environmental conditions monitored with an experimental microprocessor. "A General Electric Reuter-Stokes model RS-412 Disease Predictor was placed near the edge of the 14th tee at the Hunting Creek Golf Course, Prospect, KY. This location was chosen because of its history of Pythium blight. Weather and disease prediction data were stored in the microprocessor for periods of up to 14 days and were to be recorded on a portable printer periodically connected to the unit. Occurrence of Pythium blight was noted daily from Jul 16 - Oct 6 by the golf course superintendent. Fungicides were not applied to areas where the disease was being monitored. The RS Disease Predictor sensed Pythium favorable conditions after the first day, and continued to do so when checked periodically during the following days. It very ably performed the daily functions of collecting and storing daily high and low temperatures and relative humidities, leaf wetness periods, rainfall amounts, and disease predictions. Unfortunately, because of the overwhelming occurrence of the disease, data were not recorded from Jul 16 - Aug 20. It would appear that the predictor worked well since the disease was so prevalent, and when spot checked, the predictor confirmed that disease should be there. The disease did reoccur Aug 22 and Sep 3 which was predicted. The daily predictive data and relevant Louisville weather service and RS data from Lexington are presented in a table." |
