Abstract/Contents:Because it had been observed that turf sports pitches with a drainage layer and a sandy root zone green-up later than normal in the spring, soil temperatures 5 cm and 50 cm (in some cases) below the surface were recorded. Temperatures were on average 0.5-1.0 deg.C lower at 5 cm depth beneath a turf constructed with a drainage layer and a sandy root zone than beneath one on natural soil or one constructed with a soil layer between the sandy top layer and the drainage layer. Temperatures at 50 cm were also slightly lower under constructed sport turf than under natural soil.
