Abstract/Contents:Results are presented from a series of American studies on Poa pratensis cv. Merion, Festuca rubra, Stenotaphrum secundatum and Cynodon dactylon. Grass leaf clippings when left in situ decomposed quite rapidly compared with stem and crown tissues. Contrary to popular opinion, they did not thus contribute significantly to thatch accumulation, although they were unsightly. Leaf decomposition and recycling of N could occur within 14 days after cutting and recycling of other nutrients was also marked. Comparisons of rotary lawn mowers which spread clippings as a mulch or collected them for removal indicated the possibility of constructing mowers which would cut clippings into smaller lengths and force them deeper into the turf.
