Abstract/Contents:Discusses the United States Golf Association (USGA) Turfgrass and Environmental Research Program's support for Audubon International's effort to preserve golf course wildlife habitat. Overviews the contributions that the USGA makes to many research projects through the Wildlife Links Program to show that golf courses can produce habitat for wildlife in the area as well as providing play surfaces for golf. Mentions that bluebird populations have increased intensely following the installation of nest boxes onto golf courses in 1980 and that populations of brown headed nuthatches have steadily decreased. States that "Dr. Stanback and his colleagues were determined to identify factors that were contributing to the lack of observed nuthatches in the sampled nest boxes, and to determine what, if anything, could be done to reverse this trend." Notes that to do this they had to omit bluebirds from the nest boxes by changing the size of the entrance holes. Continues about what they did to accommodate to the nuthatches and their nesting habits. Reports that "the results clearly indicated that nest box occupancy favored bluebirds when the entry hole was large (1.5 inches), but when bluebirds were excluded using the smaller entry holes (1.1 inches), nuthatches readily occupied nest boxes." Emphasizes that brown headed nuthatches need some nest boxes set aside that are specifically for them. Includes that "bluebird-proof nest boxes really work. At some of our courses, we have gone from zero to 20 successful nuthatch nests in just a few years." Concludes that this work is just another instance of where golf courses can assist "Mother Nature".
