Abstract/Contents:"'Texas Common' St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) plugs were planted into PVC columns (10 cm diam, 30 cm long) and grown under three different N levels (79, 49 and 25 kg N ha-1 month-1). After establishment, the turfed columns were subjected to five temperature treatments (actively growing, 50 and 100% slow dormancy, and 50 and 100% rapid dormancy). Analysis of available and reserve carbohydrates were done for each temperature treatment. During the actively growing phase, the majority of carbohydrates were located in the starch fraction. As temperatures were lowered, starch concentrations were reduced in the turfgrass as the plant approached dormancy. This reduction in starch was offset by an increase in the soluble sugar concentration. These conversion were more dramatic in plants subjected to a rapid chill stress as compared to the slow chill stress. Low N treated turfs consistently produced the largest root system."
