Abstract/Contents:Discusses how trees may potentially add beauty, define fairways, and provide shade to golf courses in North America. Explains that trees can also potentially cause issues for golf course superintendents. Notes that it is important for a superintendent to develop an effective strategy for balancing turf and tree maintenance. Recommends "thinning, cutting windows in the trees or selected removal of trees on golf courses to allow more light onto the greens." Advises that "when choosing what trees to plant, it's helpful for a club or a superintendent to be aware of which ones are indigenous to a particular area. Tree nurseries can be helpful in that regard." States that it is also important to realize how big the trees will be when fully grown because the size could block sunlight, potentially killing the turf.
