| Abstract/Contents: | "The main objective of this research was to assess introspecific ET-rate diversity within collections of 24 bermudagrasses (Cynodon spp.), 10 St. Augustinegrasses (Stenotaphrum secundatum), and 11 zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp.), under both field and environmental simulation chamber conditions. Three replicate turfs of each genotype were established onto a fritted clay root zone contained in plastic minilysimeter pots and grown under optimal growing conditions and nonlimiting soil moisture for the duration of the studies. ET rates and leaf extension rates (LER) were measured for 3 consecutive years in the field studies. ET rate and LER plus assessments of shoot density (SHD) and abaxial and adaxial leaf blade stomatal densities were measured in the chamber study. The ranges of 3-yr cultivar ET-rate means for field studies were 2.9 to 6.3 mm d-1 for St. Augustinegrass. For all studies and species, the only significant correlation between ET rate and the other 4 plant measurements was with SHD for St. Augustinegrass (r=0.74)." |
