Abstract/Contents:"Iron deficiency, characterized by chlorosis of plant tissue, is a major limiting factor in turfgrass production on calcareous oils. The objectives of this study were to evaluate a screening procedure which would enable the identification of Fe-deficiency stress-tolerant turfgrass cultivars and to assess the potential of a newly developed synthetic ferrihydrite as a slow-release Fe fertilizer. Iron-stress sensitive (Raleigh St. Augustinegrass) and Fe-stress tolerant (Tifway bermudagrass) cultivars were grown under glasshouse conditions in a growth medium consisting of quartz sand and 5% CaCO3. Iron treatments consisted of synthetic ferrihydrite equivalent to 2 to 10 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Fe. Iron chlorosis was noticeable in St. Augustinegrass 83 days after establishment (DAE). Bermudagrass showed no evidence of Fe-stress until 300 DAE. The chlorosis rating and chlorophyll content of each turfgrass species were correlated to the amount of DTPA-extractable Fe in the growth medium. Neither plant biomass nor tissue Fe was correlated to DTPA-extractable Fe. Five mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Fe was selected as the optimum Fe level to screen for Fe-stress tolerance. Synthetic ferrihydrite applied in amounts greater than 5 mg kg-1 DTPA-extractable Fe was sufficient to alleviate Fe-stress deficiency symptoms."
