Abstract/Contents:Several nitrogen carrier evaluation studies were conducted at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center in 1989. Nitrogen carriers evaluated included the following: Sustane, PCUs, SCUs, Andersons fertilizers, Sierra fertilizers, Agriform, Turf Restore, Greens Restore, Scotts fertilizers, Nor-Am fertilizer, N-Sure, Nitro 26, IBDU, ureaformaldehyde, Milorganite, 18-4-10, LESCO Elite, Iron-S, GS-1, and Ferromec. 1st study was on Challenger Kentucky bluegrass with plot size 4' x 12', 3 replications. One pound of N was applied per 1000 sq.ft. on June 25, 1989. Since Challenger has an inherently dark green color, most of the carriers performed well with few meaningful differences noted. Five months after the November application, the plastic coated fertilizers from Sierra and Canadian Industries Limited seemed to have slightly better residual effect. Some necrotic ring spot disease randomly appeared in the plot area in September. 2nd study was established July 14, 1989 on Palmer and Citation II perennial ryegrasses. 1 or 3 lbs. of N per 1000 sq.ft. was applied to plot sizes of 4' x 12 ', 3 replications. One month after application (Aug 15) good performers included the plastic coated ureas (PCU) from CIL, sulfur coated urea, Agriform, Scotts 35-0-0, IBDU and N-Sure. A late fall nitrogen fertilization study was initiated November 11, 1988 on a Penncross creeping bentgrass green at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center with plot size 4' x 6', 3 replications. In late January, Scots Iron-S performed best while in early March Greens Restore, Scotts Iron-S and GS-1 did well. After an early May evaluation, no meaningful differences were found. Recommendations based on the studies are given.
