| Abstract/Contents: | The frost resistance and undercooling behavior of plant tissue on freezing were investigated in Lolium multiflorum cv. RvPp, Festuca pratensis cv. Aberystwyth S53, L. perenne cv. Aberystwyth S24, Poa trivialis, Agrostis canina, A. stolonifera and Phleum pratense cv. Aberystwyth S352. Undercooling entails cooling of living plant tissue below 0 deg.C at a rate exceeding about 1 deg./h. Ice formation after undercooling is usually intracellular and fatal. Results of preliminary work indicated that intracellular freezing was not a cause of winter kill in hardened grasses under any but exceptionally severe conditions. Unhardened plants could undercool to a considerable extent under much milder conditions and might be at risk from intracellular freezing during autumn and spring. The Lolium spp. tested (because of their ability to undercool to a considerable extent without freezing) had a better inherent capability of surviving moderate frosts in the unhardened state than other grasses tested. |
