| Abstract/Contents: | "A major problem in warm-season turfgrasses is the emergence of annual grasses during the spring of each year. Preemergence herbicides are used for the control of these annual weedy grass species. Some of the preemergence herbicides, such as dinitroanilines, have been shown to adversely influence root development in some agricultural crops and cool-season perennial turfgrasses. This study assessed the effects of prodiamine, pendimethalin and oryzalin of the dinitroaniline family, plus oxadiazon, DCPA, and dithiopyr on the root systems of two warm-season turfgrasses Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Raleigh' and Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis 'Tifway'. Root density, root mass, and total root length were observed at 4, 12, and 32 weeks after herbicide application. The 4-week results indicate that prodiamine and pendimethalin adversely affected the turfgrass root systems of both species by as much as 50% of total root length, while DCPA, oryzalin, oxadiazon and dithiopyr showed no significant differences for any of the three root parameters of either species. The 12 week and 32 week results showed no significant difference among the treatments." |
