| Abstract/Contents: | "About 240,000 acres (97,000 ha) of roadside grass were managed in 1972 at a cost of 4.72 pounds/acre for each cut or 11.31 pounds/acre for each spray application (11.66 pounds and 27.95 pounds/ha). Reasons for management could be divided into engineering, agricultural, amenity and nature conservation. Different standards of management were applicable in different places, with higher standards in built-up areas. For the most efficient and economic programmes of management of non-productive grass such as on roadsides, the choice of appropriate standards is essential. The most important factors are usually control of height of vegetation, and prevention of scrub encroachment. Regardless of height all grassed areas should be cut once a year to prevent scrub. If height is of concern a standard of 30 cm can usually be achieved by two cuts a year only, over the period of maximum culm growth. If standards of less than 30 cm are set there will be a continuing problem of reducing the growth of grass leaves (as opposed to the culms). The lower the height the more often cutting will be required and the greater the expense. Results of experiments using cutting machines and chemicals were described in relation to the principal factors." |
