Abstract/Contents:Discusses the work that must go in to prepping a golf course for winter to maximize the revenue from golf into fall. States that more golfers are driven to play more rounds in the spring rather than the fall, so it is suggested that the superintendents "sacrifice some performance this fall for better turf and playing conditions in the spring." Informs that "turf loss form direct winter damage...is becoming more frequent and affecting a larger area," and that "winter survival is about managing water." Suggests that the superintendents apply protective surfaces to protect the turf from the snow, and try to remove as much snow from the green as possible. Explains that "the more important issue is the breaking of dormancy that occurs in late winter or early spring." Describes how "bowl-shaped greens that accumulate water are especially vulnerable" to damage when emerging from dormancy, and provides different methods to potentially avoid this.
