| Abstract/Contents: | "A characteristic soil moisture pattern developed in the soil of the growth zones of five out of six M. oreades fairy rings in lawns in the Canadian prairies in early spring. Bacterial counts in soil from the bare zones of four of the six rings were higher than in the outer or the inner stimulated zones indicating an early stage in the degradation of the fairy ring mycelium in the bare zone. In three rings in one location fungal counts were lower in the bare zone than in the inner or outer stimulated zone. This suggested that M. oreades had suppressed other fungi where it was most abundant. Some isolates of fungal species from the soul of M. oreades fairy rings are strongly antagonistic to the growth of the fairy ring fungus in culture. Dikaryotic isolates of M. oreades from different localities, from the same ring and from the same culture showed mutual antagonism. Both types of antagonism probably operate when ring and non-ring soil are mixed in M. oreades ring elimination techniques which are showing promise of effectiveness in long term field tests." |
