Abstract/Contents: | Examines the decrease in the trend referred to as "Augusta Syndrome," defining it as the golfers' demand for a particular set of course conditions in the weeks, months, and years following the annual Masters Tournament. Discusses that the previous industry-wide pressure felt by superintendents to respond with heightened post-Masters conditions has decreased and instead has inspired many superintendents to put more into their maintenance operations. Explores the efforts made by industry leaders to educate superintendents on the work that goes into the Augusta National look and the benefits of following a simpler approach instead. Reports that the two trends that mirror Augusta's declining influence the most are the spread of ultradwarf bermudagrass greens and the restoration of older design. Suggests that the Augusta Syndrome lingers for roughly 2-3 weeks post tournament compared to the previously year-round influence. |
