| Abstract/Contents: | During 1964-1973 ten football pitches with soil heating were constructed in Sweden. Initially the turf rooting zone consisted of fine material, which tended to compact, but subsequently a 40:60% mixture by volume of peat and sand was used. In all cases the upper layer had an excess of clay or humus particles which resulted in waterlogging and a build-up of nutrients, particularly phosphates. The pitches are normally heated for 6-8 weeks and costs are shown for heating by hot water and electricity. Without a plastic cover the cost of heating doubled. |
