Abstract/Contents:"Four cultivars of velvet bentgrass Agrostis canina (Avalon=SR 720, Cansas, Greenwich, Licania) and eight cultivars of creeping bentgrass Agrostis stolonifera (Bengal, L 93, PennA-1, Penn A-2, Penn A-4, Penn G-2, Penncross, Providence) were compared in a field trial from 2003 to 2006. The experimental site is considered to be representative for Germany and central Europe. During the trial, overall turf quality, colour and disease resistance were elevated. The results featured huge differences between the creeping bentgrass and velvet bentgrass varieties. In the first trial year some varieties of Agrostis canina showed a very dense sward and visual aspect. Afterwards Agrostis stolonifera produced much better general turf quality than Agrostis canina and showed better disease resistance. This research highlighted that under the climate conditions of Germany, Agrostis stolonifera should be the preferred species for golf course putting greens. Some varieties of Agrostis canina could be an alternative under low maintenance conditions and low wear stress and under the view point of reducing the use of pesticides and fertilisers."
