| Abstract/Contents: | "Within the climatic limits of this country the chemical nature of the soil can have a controlling influence on the distribution of many native species. Surveys relating their distribution to such factors as pH provide a valuable source of information at the planning stage. They can indicate the soil preferences of the species which will be sown and may also be used to match species to new sites when site conditions are known. The current economic situation favours the use of species that can either survive or even thrive on infertile conditions and much fundamental information can be gained from a study of their behaviour." Four examples of Deschampsia flexuosa, Festuca ovina, Holcus lanatus and Lolium perenne are shown. |
