Abstract/Contents:"Most state extension services or university systems publish turfgrass fertilization guides. A review of 23 such publications from 19 different states is presented in Table 1. Turfgrass fertilization regimes must be devised to account for location, soil conditions, intended use (required turfgrass recuperative potential), type of turf, and chosen level of management intensity. Location considerations would include temperature conditions, rainfall, elevation, latitude, and shade. Since a given fertilization regime is dependent upon many variables, a comparison of programs between states should be done cautiously. Tall fescue nitrogen fertilization recommendations ranged from 1 to 6 pounds of N per 1000 ft2 per year across the 19 states included. The highest rates in Maryland and South Carolina, and lowest in from Nebraska. Hybrid bermudagrass was suggested to receive between 3 to 10 pounds of N per 1000 ft2 per year. Most states listed recommended nitrogen fertilization rates for Kentucky bluegrass. These ranged from 2 to 7 pounds of N per 1000 ft2 annually. Centipedegrass was recommended to receive the least amount of nitrogen (1.8 pounds N per 1000 ft2 per year), yet suggested levels fluctuated from 0.5 to 4.0 pounds of N per 1000 ft2 per year."
