Abstract/Contents: | "This evaluation was conducted at the O.J. Noer Turfgrass Research and Education Facility in Verona, WI on a stand of perennial ryegrass. The experimental area was seeded on 1 Jun and maintained at a 1.5-in. cutting height on a native silt loam soil. Individual plots measured 3 ft x 5 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Individual treatments were applied at a nozzle pressure of 40 psi using a CO2-pressurized boom sprayer equipped with two XR Teejet 8005 VS nozzles. All fungicides were agitated by hand and applied in the equivalent of 2.0 gal of water per 1000 ft2. All treatments were applied once on 14 Jul. One day after fungicide applications, each individual plot was inoculated with Pythium aphanidermatum, covered with an evergreen cover, and irrigated 3 times daily to produce optimum Pythium blight conditions. Inoculum was prepared by growth of P. aphanidermatum in liquid culture with sterilized grass blades. Disease severity (%) was visually assessed 3, 7, and 10 days post inoculation. Data collected was subjected to an analysis of variance and means were separated using the Waller-Duncan test. Pythium blight pressure was high in the field trial in 2011 with non-treated controls averaging 80% disease 10 days following inoculation. All treatments suppressed Pythium blight compared to the non-treated control, yet several treatments failed to achieve acceptable (<5%) Pythium blight suppression. Subdue MAXX and Renown provided the most effective Pythium suppression in the field trial. No phytotoxicity was observed with any product." |
