| Abstract/Contents: | The effect of soil cultivation on soil strength was studied on a Michigan State University athletic field. Three cultivators were used: the Aer-Way aerifier, Toro aerator, and Verti-Drain aerifier. The Aer-WAy creates a triangular shaped slot in the soil with the tip reaching 4 to 5 inches deep. The Toro unit with tines 5/8 dia, penetrated to the 3" depth. The Verti-Drain unit, equipped with hollow or solid tines on 2.5" spacings penetrated 6" or 9" deep. Cultivation treatments were one pass, on 9/5/86. The soil resistance (hardness) measurements were taken with a soil penetratometer on 9/19/86. The Verti-drain cultivator with 6" hollow tines reduced soil resistance the most. It disrupted soil up to 8" deep. |
