Abstract/Contents:The effect of soil cultivation on turf visual quality was studied on a "Ram I" Kentucky bluegrass turf. Three cultivators were used: the Toro aerator, the Coremaster unit and the Verti-Drain unit. The Toro unit with tines 5/8" dia, penetrated to the 2.75" depth. The Coremaster was equipped with 0.5" diameter tines, with 2.75" or 1" penetration. The Verti-Drain unit, equipped with hollow or solid tines on 2.5" spacings penetrated 6" or 9" inches deep. All treatments were initiated on 9/2/87. The Toro treatments were applied at three frequencies; September only, Sept-May, and Sept-May-June treatments. Two treatments were performed with the Coremaster unit to penetrate to a depth of 1" or 2.75". Two Verti-Drain treatments were applied: one with hollow tines and one with solid tines. Any soil cores brought to the surface were broken up and any organic material leftover was raked off. The test plot received only minimal traffic from maintenance personnel. Visual evaluations were taken on 6/22/88 and 8/25/88. Visual turf quality was not consistently effected until 8/25/88. The turf that received the most frequent aerification with the Toro unit was most improved in appearance. Turf was slightly darker and had a more uniform color. The treatments with the Verti-Drain solid tine unit improved turf quality relative to the control. The others did not improve relative to the control.
