Abstract/Contents:The best nitrogen program is one in which you make "planned" applications of nitrogen during fall and winter and follow an anti-spring and summer N program. During spring and summer, N applications should be made only when necessary to increase top growth. Coring improves the exchange of air and water between the soil and the atmosphere while encouraging deeper and more extensive rooting. Late spring aeration maximizes water infiltration rates during summer and minimizes localized dry spots. High evapotranspiration rates and short grass roots necessitate frequent summer irrigation. To get maximum top and root growth, a less-frequent mowing pattern is usually superior. Delayed or infrequent mowing during high stress periods is beneficial. Excessive frequency and very short mowing heights in spring can result in shorter and less vigorous roots in the summer.
