| Abstract/Contents: | "16 cultivars of Poa pratensis were evaluated in lawn trials at Weibullsholm in the years 1972-76. The trial was sown on 16th June 1972 with three 4 m squared plots of each cultivar. The fertility regime was moderately high with 3 dressings per year providing, on the average, the nitrogn equivalent of 230 kg/ha and year. The plots were cut at 30mm, once or twice a week during the growing season. Ratings were done once or twice a month as long as the plots were free from snow, and included the usual characters, density, general impression etc. Shoot density was measured in late autumn with shoot counts of 5 turf samples, each with a diameter of 35 mm, per plot. Trial results show the following cultivars as superior in performance as well as showing good persistance: Bensun (=Warren's A -34), Sydsport, Cello (WW Ag 452), Birka, Eagle and Merion. There were notable differences in general impression between cultivars at different seasons. Bensun, Merion and Birka showed good performance all the year round. Sydsport showed up less well during the winter, whereas in the case of Nuggett, a striking difference in performanc between summer and winter was observed. Shoot density showed an overall decline from 1973 to 1976 due to dry summers but was found to be particularly high in Eagle, Bensun, Nugget and Merion." |
