Abstract/Contents:Describes the characteristics of good service and explores ways that superintendents can achieve quality service. Suggests superintendents aim to provide "a little bit extra" of what members want. Also suggests that staff be educated on service skills. States that "service is not about working harder - it is about working smarter. Service is much more than smiling at the customer, it is giving the customer such excellent service that they smile." Lists characteristics of an environment that will produce excellent service, including "(1) a management style which scores highly on enthusiasm and commitment; (2) managers who are strong in people management and hence relate well to staff; (3) a history of encouraging staff participation and involvement, a non-autocratic culture; (4) good communications systems which promote openness and confidence; (5) a readiness to see the typical hierarchical company model."
