| Abstract/Contents: | Intracellular proteins from gliotoxin-producing strains of Gliocladium virens were compared with the proteins from non-producing strains using 2-dimensional electrophoresis. Prominent proteins at 33.5 kDa and 22.5 kDa were always produced by G. virens. The isoelectric points of both proteins were consistently lower in the non-producing strains. In addition, there were several minor proteins that were always associated with the ability or inability to produce gliotoxin. The results suggest that the prominent 33.5 kDa and 22.5 kDa proteins may not be biosynthetic enzymes, but they may effect the regulation of gliotoxin biosynthesis and export from the cell. The significance of this result may be relevant to enhancing gliotoxin production for improved biocontrol performance. |
