Abstract/Contents:"A system for selecting environmentally safe herbicides for use in turf is discussed. Three pieces of information are needed: 1) major soil series of the field to be treated, 2) herbicide selected, and 3) application method. The leaching potential of 35 herbicides is computed based on their retention by the soil, half-life, rate applied, and fraction hitting the soil. Leaching potential of 66 coastal plains soils, is computed based on texture, pH, and organic matter content of the 0 to 3 foot deep soil profile. Herbicides and soils are ranked according to their leaching potentials and a matrix is provided for allowing applicators to avoid using "hot" chemicals on "hot" soils and to select environmentally safe chemicals or to select application methods that safen a given product."
