Abstract/Contents:Discusses the potential consequences of soil compaction and overwatering, including restricted water penetration, reduced movement of water through the surface soil, limited growth of grass roots, decreased potassium and phosphorus in the plant shoot, and high concentrations of sodium accumulation. Overviews trials of "deep aeration", the results of which showed "significant increases in turf vigour, appearance, rooting depths, and water infiltration." States that "the size of the green, sprinkler system requirements, and drainage needs must be considered" when contemplating the installation of new golf greens. Compares the potential benefits of deep aerification versus rebuilding a green.
