Abstract/Contents:"Recent malathion spraying efforts in East San Diego County has triggered widespread optimism amongst local superintendents. Despite the overall public resentment, the California Department of Agriculture firmly believes the spraying at night, from a procession of six helicopters equipped with high powered spray rigs, will help eliminate the dreaded Mexican Fruit Fly in the infested areas. Superintendents have calculated that they will shave thousands of dollars off their yearly budgets for insecticide costs. The malathion which is labeled for aphids, leafhoppers, ants, mosquitos and other pests has been chosen for its relative low toxicity level and inherent safeness to the public. When the media questioned the superintendents regarding the safety or relative danger of malathion, they referenced the agricultural departments attempt at calming the public by showing a man drinking a glass of malathion on television. That man has suffered no side effects to this day." The mixing station was at a local airport, where other superintendents gathered for other reasons. " They were purportedly seen bribing the chopper pilots to spray additional nutrients over their courses as they passed." One superintendent, who claimed his course was deficient in potassium, added five gallons of whipped bananas to the malathion mix. Another was seen giving a pilot a bag of copper pennies to spread over his course because it was low in copper. Call it perserverance, craziness or American turf-related ingenuity. "Either way it's evident the superintendents in this local chapter are intent on going to the extremes for the sakes of their courses."
