Abstract/Contents:Greenskeepers can cut costs by switching to spot applications of herbicides, and adopting a more selective weed control policy claims Nomix-Chipman weed control specialist Nick Butler. When spot treating it is important that overdosing does not occur. The Nomix Compact lance with a uniform droplet size which reduces drift and allows accurate placement of spray, combined with precise calibration, gives safe spot treatment. It meets with COSHH requirements. To control speedwells, chickweed, dandelion, plantains, black medoc and knotgrass a mix of 2,4-D and CMPP such as Zennapron may be used. Mr. Butler advised two half rate applications at right angles to one another to get maximum coverage with no striping. When growing conditions are good, an application of fertilizer two weeks before applying the weedkiller will allow the weeds to develop a large leaf area before spraying. Allow 2-3 days for the product to be absorbed before mowing.
