Abstract/Contents:"As turf managers, we superintendents look for a wide variety of qualities in the grasses we choose to use on our courses. We try to avoid grasses which are difficult to maintain. In California, we must all deal with kikuyugrass at one level or another. We approach it as a grass which is naturally occurring on our courses. Sometimes a primary turf and many times as a serious weed. Dr. Vic Gibeault has put together a research team consisting of plant breeders and geneticists, as well as weed experts. These researchers are going to develop acceptable fine turf-types of kikuyugrass. They are also seeking methods of selectively controlling or eradicating kikuyugrass where it occurs as a weed in other fine turfs. It is entirely possible that, in the not too distant future, we will be playing golf on hybrid kikuyugrass and successfully removing common kikuyugrass from our preferred turfs and ground covers. Everyone invovled in turf use will benefit and everyone who will benefit has an obligation to participate in supporting the program.
