| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the role microbiology plays, primarily in soil. Discusses that using fertilizers and pesticides on the soil sterilizes it by removing microbial activity, when the scientific consensus is that "fertilizer actually increases microbial activity because fertilizers stimulate plant growth, which in turn stimulates soil microorganisms." Mentions the soil testing for the presence of bacteria and nutrients in the soil. Overviews the work done by Dr. Jenny Kao-Kniffin, as she breeds "genetically identical turf plants in pots, then selecting the few pots that have the best and those with the worst growth. Since the grass is identical, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil are identical, the growth difference is related to the biological properties of the soil." Concludes that "our general increased understanding of the importance of the microbial communities in our bodies and elsewhere will likely stimulate an increase in products and services revolving around soil microbes." |
