Abstract/Contents:"'Lanyin III' Zoysia japonica Steud. is widely used on sports turfs in south China. A shallow root system related with rootzone was often occurred in 'Lanyin III' Zoysia japonica sports turfs, resulting in lower turf quality. This study was aimed to examine the effects of five different rootzone mixes on root growth of 'Lanyin III' zoysiagrass. The pot experiment of rootzone mixes treated with different ratios of sand, soil and peat were conducted by planting 'Lanyin III' Zoysia japonica stolons. The underground biomass and root vigor of 'Lanyin III' zoysiagrass turf were measured during the experiment. The results showed that the pure sand rootzone was the greatest and the pure soil rootzone the least in terms of underground biomass, meanwhile the two rootzones had higher root vigor, but the values of the pure sand rootzone appeared higher and more stable. Based on the above results, it was recommended that the pure sand rootzone was the best one for the construction of 'Lanyin III' zoysiagrass sports turf."
