| Abstract/Contents: | "In a greenhouse experiment carried out to study the effects of increasing compaction (bulk density) for a range of colliery spoil material on grass yield and root growth, the bulk densities used were in the range 1.10-1.60 g cm-3. Grass yield and root growth were both lower in the more compacted pots, but increasing compaction had a greater effect on root growth than on grass yield. There was shallower rooting in the more dense pots. The different spoil materials had significant effects on grass growth. In particular the coarser burnt spoils had higher total root weights and root:shoot ratios, but also shallower rooting compared to the finer-textured unburnt spoils." |
