| Abstract/Contents: | "Seventy-two cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) representing the 1985 NTEP selections were evaluated at the Landscape Management Research Center, University Park, Pa. The study was established in the fall of 1985 in a completely randomized block design with three replications. The 4 x 6 plots were seeded at 2 lbs / 1000 sq.ft. The area received 1.0 lb nitrogen / 1000 sq.ft. in 1990 and was mowed at 1.75 in. Crabgrass was controlled with pendimethalin appliedon April 20 and broadleaf weeds were controlled with 2,4-D, MCCP, and dicamba on July 29. The area was irrigated as needed to prevent dormancy. Quality was rated on May 8, August 1 and September 12 using a scale of 0-9, where 9=best quality. Color, density, weed and disease presence were criteria in assessing quality. The cultivars were also rated for spring green-up on April 4 using a scale of 0-9, where 9 = greenest turf. Percent of plots affected with Helminthosporium leaf spot disease were rated on May 8. This percentage was converted to a scale of 1-10 where 10 = 100% plot affected using a modified Horsefall-Barret scale. Ratings were subjected to analysis of variance and Fisher's protected lsd at the 5 percent level." |
