Abstract/Contents:"Preemergence herbicides (PH) have been shown to reduce root dry weights of several turfgrass species. However, very little is known regarding the effect of PH on root architecture. This study examined the effect of several commonly applied PH on bermudagrass cv. Tifway [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] rooting for 12 weeks after treatment (WAT). Herbicides were applied as single applications of dithiopyr, oxidiazon, pendimethalin, or quinclorac at manufacturers recommended label rates. At 2, 4, 8, 12 WAT, bermudagrass roots were harvested and analyzed for total root length (TRL), surface area (SA), and diameter using the WinRhizo System. Pendimethalin-treated bermudagrass exhibited the greatest reduction in rooting in excess of 55% of control (POC) for TRL and SA at 8 WAT. Oxidiazon and quinclorac-treated bermudagrass exhibited patterns of early reduction in rooting of 15 to 25 POC and 28 to 41 POC, respectively, through 8 WAT before rebounding to control levels; whereas, a steady decline in diothiopyr-treated bermudagrass rooting was evident throughout the 12 week trial. Decline in root architectural parameters from PH treatment indicate root soil exploitation and uptake functions may be temporarily compromised."
