Abstract/Contents:"Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) and false green kyllinga (Kyllinga gracillima L.) are perennial weeds that are found in all species of turfgrass and are typically found in moist areas. They are found in the south and as far north as Connecticut. These weeds constitute management options that fall outside of normal weed control efforts in turfgrass. Typically, special herbicides are marketed for sedge control and are used in addition to normal broadleaf and grass weed control efforts. A combination product that includes multiple herbicide active ingredients and provides a broad spectrum of weed control that includes sedges, broadleaves, and grasses is needed. Amicarbazone and pyrithiobac sodium are experimental herbicides that could offer sedge, broadleaf, and grass control in turfgrass. Our objectives are: 1.) evaluate amicarbazone, metsulfuron, and pyrithiobac sodium when applied alone and under various tank mixes for the control of yellow nutsedge and false green kyllinga. 2.) Evaluate tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea L.) tolerance to amicarbazone, metsulfuron, and pyrithiobac sodium when applied alone and under various tank mixes. Studies were conducted at Brookemeade Sod Farm in Doswell, VA on tall fescue and at Chatmoss Country Club in Martinsville, VA on Kentucky bluegrass. A randomized complete block design was used at both locations. Treatments were applied June 21 and July 14, respectively. Treatments included metsulfuron, amicarbazone, pyrithiobac sodium, metsulfuron+amicarbazone, metsulfuron+pyritiobac sodium, amicarbazone+pyrithiobac sodium, metsulfuron+amicarbazone+pyrithiobac sodium, and a nontreated check. A nonionic surfactant was added to all treatments at 0.25 % v/v. Herbicide rates were as follows, metsulfuron (58 g ai/ha), amicarbazone (244 g ai/ha), and pyrithiobac sodium (106 g ai/ha). Cover, control, and injury data were collected and means were separated using Fisher's LSD. No treatments effectively controlled yellow nutsedge (>= 50%) 1 MAT. All treatments effectively controlled false green kyllinga (>= 50%) with the exception of metsulfuron, amicarbazone, and metsulfuron+amicarbazone 1 MAT. Pyrithiobac sodium controls false green kyllinga better than metsulfuron and amicarbazone. Furthermore, pyrithiobac sodium must be present in tank mix to effectively control false green kyllinga (>= 50%). All treatments significantly injured tall fescue (>= 15%) with the exception of amicarbazone and pyrithiobac sodium applied alone."
