Abstract/Contents:"An evaluation of fungicides for control of dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris 'Penncross') maintained under golf course greens management conditions, at 0.16 inch cutting height, was conducted at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center. The test area was fertilized on 26 Apr and 19 Jun with 1.0 lb N per 1000 sq ft (Lesco 32-3-10). On 28 May, an application of Dyrene at 8 oz per 1000 sq ft was applied to control a spring outbreak of dollar spot on the experimental area. Individual plots, 3 ft x 15 ft, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experimental area was inoculated on 10 Jun by hand scattering S. homoeocarpa-infected rye grain over the entire test area. Treatments were applied with a CO2-powered boom sprayer, using T-jet 8004 nozzles, at 30 psi, in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1000 sq ft. Granular formulations were hand-scattered from a shaker-top jar. Applications were made on 5 and 20 Jun, except as noted in the table. Dollar spot was evaluated on 1 and 15 Jul. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and Duncan's Multiple Range test. The majority of the chemicals tested gave excellent control of dollar spot, with 19 of 36 treatments providing complete disease suppression. The bacterial biocontrol agents (LT 75, B 153-2-2, LT 26, UW 85, 6792, LT 40, LT 13), which have been effective in control of soil-borne diseases caused by species of Pythium and Rhizoctonia, were ineffective against this foliar fungal pathogen, even though an attempt was made to protect the infection court by spraying the biocontrol onto the grass foliage. Throughout the trial, plots treated with EXP 10064B exhibited stunting and dark-greening of foliage."
