Abstract/Contents:"An evaluation of fungicide treatments for control of Rhizoctonia blight (Rhizoctonia solani) and dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was conducted at the Landscape Management Research Center, University Park, PA. The turf was a mixed stand of Citation II, Birdie II, Omega II, and Troubadour perennial ryegrass, maintained under home lawn/golf course fairway management conditions. On 16 May, 11 Jun, and 20 Jul, 1.0 lb, 1.0 lb, and 0.9 lb actual N (Urea 46-0-0) per 1000 sq ft, respectively, were applied to the experimental area. On 20 May, Troubadour perennial ryegrass was slit-seeded into the experimental area at a rate of 3.0 lb per 1000 sq ft. On 24 May, fungicides were applied to the test area as follows: Dyrene at 4 fl oz per 1000 sq ft to control red thread and pink patch, and Banol at 2 fl oz per 1000 sq ft to control Pythium damping-off. Individual test plots, 3 ft x 15 ft, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. On 12 Jul, the experimental area was inoculated by hand scattering R. solani-infested rye grain throughout. Treatments were applied with a CO2 boom sprayer, using T-jet 8004 nozzles at 30 psi, in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1000 sq ft. Granular formulations were hand-scattered from shaker-top jars. Applications were made on 31 May, 13 and 26 Jun, 11 and 24 Jul, and 6 Aug, except as noted in the table. The experimental area was irrigated with 1 inch water daily, applied at 1600 hrs. Treatments were visually evaluated for Rhizoctonia blight and dollar spot severity on 23 Jul. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and Duncan's Multiple Range test. Rhizoctonia blight intensity was light in the experimental area throughout the trial, and statistical separation of data is poor. Most of the treatments provided excellent dollar spot suppression, with the exception of the bacterial biological agents (B153-2-2, LT40, UW85, LT13, LT26), ProStar (a narrow-spectrum fungicide for control of Rhizoctonia blight), and the 0.5 and 1.0 oz rates of MON 24017 applied at 28-day intervals."
