Abstract/Contents:"Dimension (MON-15151 1EC) herbicide was evaluated in 1989 under an EPA approved experimental use permit (EUP) in turf. The common name for the active ingredient in Dimension herbicide is dithiopyr. Trials were established under commercial use conditions throughout the United States on both cool and warm season turfgrasses. The product was distributed to selected golf courses, lawn care and landscape maintenance companies, and municipal and industrial organizations within approved states and was applied through commercial equipment. Performance was evaluated on sites up to one-half hectare in size. Dimension herbicide provided excellent season-long preemergence and early postemergence (1 to 3 leaf stage) control of crabgrass. Rates required for season-long crabgrass control with a single application varied from north to south in the country. In northern areas where crabgrass germinates later and has a shorter growing season, the rate range of 0.28 to 0.43 kg ai/ha was effective. In central areas which includes the transition zone, the effective rate range was 0.43 to 0.56 kg ai/ha, In southern areas where crabgrass germinates early and has a long growing season, the rate range of 0.56 to 0.84 kg ai/ha was effective. The lower rates in the ranges were effective under lighter crabgrass infestations and highly competitive turf conditions, and the higher rates in the ranges were necessary under heavier infestations and less competitive or poorly managed turf. Later season applications of Dimension herbicide provided postemergence control of crabgrass in the 1 to 3 tiller stage when applied in tank mixture with 1.12 to 2.24 kg ai/ha MSMA on tolerant turfgrasses. Effective rates of Dimension herbicide in tank mixture were 0.28 kg ai/ha, 0.43 kg ai/ha, and 0.56 kg ai/ha in northern, central, and southern areas, respectively. Dimension herbicide also provided preemergence control or suppression of a number of other annual grass and broadleaf weeds to include annual bluegrass, foxtail, goosegrass, spurge, lespedeza, and oxalis. Excellent turf safety was demonstrated on both cool and warm season turfgrasses with Dimension herbicide. Cool season turfgrasses demonstrating tolerance included bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. Warm season turfgrasses demonstrating tolerance included bahiagrass, bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass. The EPA has granted an EUP extension for Dimension turf herbicide for expanded evaluationi in 1990. Total allocations approved under the extension are 5,981 liters of product and 1,603 hectares of ornamental turf."
