Abstract/Contents:"MON-15100 is a new experimental herbicide currently being developed for the control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in turfgrasses and ornamentals. Since winter annual weeds are troublesome in turf throughout the South, preemergence trials were established during late summer and fall to evaluate the effectiveness of MON-15100 formulations. Trials were established from September-November 1987 on bermudagrass turf locations in Texas and Georgia. Fall preemergence applications of both granular and EC formulations of MON-15100 provided control or suppression of a broad-spectrum of winter annual weeds evaluated in these trials. The granular formulation had a higher unit activity than the EC formulation. Good to excellent control of annual bluegrass and henbit was provided with 0.5-0.84 kg ai/ha of the granular formulation and 1.12-1.68 kg ai/ha of the EC formulation. These rates also provided good control or suppression of chickweed, shepherdspurse, purple cudweed, hop clover, corn speedwell, Carolina geranium, parsley piert, bittercress, little barley, and rescuegrass. In addition, the granular formulation provided control and the EC formulation provided suppression of crabgrass through the season following these applications. Good safety to bermudagrass turf was obtained with the granular formulation showing some potential to delay the greenup of turf in the spring. However, the turf recovered and overall quality was not affected. Results show MON-15100 to have good potential for use in late summer and fall applications on turf for the preemergence control of winter annual weeds. In addition, the long residual activity of this product can provide crabgrass control through the following season. Expanded evaluation of the EC formulation in turf will be conducted under an EPA approved experimental use permit for 1989."
