| Abstract/Contents: | "Regulatory efforts are restricting phosphorus (P) fertilizer applications due to concern over water quality and ecosystem P loading. Although P fertilization has been implicated as a source of impairment to ecosystems from millions of hectares of turf, there is little investigation of the contribution of soil P on turfgrass P leaching. This greenhouse experiment evaluated the effects of 3 levels of soil-test P on St, Augustinegrass quality, growth and on P leaching. The treatments were used on cv. 'Floratam' St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum Walt. Kuntze). There were significant treatment effects for all parameters evaluated with increasing P soil-test resulting in better turf quality, growth, and more P leaching. Although P improved turf agronomic performance, P leaching was above threshold levels for water quality set by regulators." |
