Abstract/Contents:"Five liquid fertilizer programs were compared to a granular fertilizer for maintenance of St. Augustinegrass lawns in North Florida during the 1986 growing season at Gainesville, FL. Response of 'Floralawn' St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Waltz.) Kuntze growing in a fine sand soil was measured in terms of fertilizer effect on turf color, quality, and growth rate; total chlorophyll content of fresh leaf tissue; and soil nutrient status and soil reaction. Response of 'Seville' St. Augustinegrass growing in close proximity to Floralawn was measured in terms of fertilizer effect on turf color and quality. Coded fertilizer treatments 271 and 697B consistently produced the highest color and quality scores, growth rates, and total chlorophyll content of fresh tissue, although less monthly variation was obtained from the coded 271 fertilizer program. Coded treatments 413, 522, 697A, and 863 produced inferior turf, although treatments 522 and 697A might have use for low maintenance St. Augustinegrass lawns if they are economically feasible Fertilizer programs did not affect soil nutrient status or soil reaction, although K levels, which tested approximately half that of the normal minimum level of 60 mg K kg-1 of soil, may have affected the low rates of topgrowth in this study. Total chlorophyll content of fresh leaves was directly related to color ratings (r = 0.969, p = 0.001). Thus in future work there is no need to conduct chlorophyll determinations along with color ratings to measure fertilizer response in St. Augustinegrass."
