Abstract/Contents:"Synthetic turf pitches are widely used in the UK, and this trend is set to increase with numerous current funding initiatives and the introduction of surfaces more acceptable to football and rugby than in the past. A current study of synthetic pitches used for hockey has been evaluating many aspects of their design and construction and in-play performance. The current test methods including the performance limits, considered to be wide, are investigated in the light of a recent programme of field monitoring at several high standard water-based pitches and one community based sandfilled pitch. The data show relatively wide variability across pitches and between pitches, especially for hardness/shock absorbency. A simple portable impact test correlated well with the industry specified Berlin impact test and has good potential for monitoring spatial variability and wear related age effects."
