| Abstract/Contents: | "Dimension (dithiopyr) is the first member of the pyridine class of herbicides being developed by Monsanto. Dimension provides selective annual weed control at low use rates in established turfgrasses. Both preemergence and postemergence activity have been observed, which is quite unique among herbicides that control weeds through inhibition of cell division. Results from extensive environmental and toxological studies have shown Dimension to exhibit low potential for adverse effects on either humans, mammals, birds, insects or the environment. Laboratory studies have shown that Dimension does not cause gene mutations, tumors, birth defects, or interfere with normal reproduction. Dimension is a highly lipophilic herbicide with low water solubility (1.38 ppm), and a high affinity for soil particles. The average partition coefficient (KOC) is a 1638 ml/g. Thus, once Dimension has been applied to turfgrass, it has low potential for groundwater contamination and/or surface runoff. Environmental fate and dislodgeable residue results show the average half-life to be 17 days after application with minimal vertical and lateral movement of Dimension in the soil. The primary means of degradation is photolysis with minimal breakdown due to microbial or hydrolysis." |
