Abstract/Contents: | "Tests were conducted from 1960 through 1962 on natural, uniformly severe infestations of Johnsongrass located on or adjacent to highway rights-of-way in Southeast Missouri. Johnsongrass mowed before, between, and after repeated dalapon treatments was compared with the untreated grass, and grass receiving mowing only or dalapon spray only. Dalapon was used at a rate of 7.4 lb/A applied as often as needed to control the grass. Results were measured by visual control estimates and by stem counts made in the early spring following each year of treatment. Results indicate that it is beneficial to mow Johnsongrass once in the early spring on areas where overtopping of winter weeds occurs. This mowing removes the winter weeds and provides for a more uniform stand of Johnsongrass to receive the first dalapon spray. Mowing after the initiation of the spray program should not be done before Johnsongrass arising from germinating seed or the regrowth of old plants reaches 6-12 inches in height. No more than one mowing should be done between any two treatments of 7.4 lb/A dalapon. Also, more effective Johnsongrass kill is obtained when the grass goes into winter dormancy with a last treatment of herbicide than with a last treatment of mowing." |
